Activating Lybia...

We are travelling to Frankfurt. Nicoletta is bringing me to the DL/PA0 border, where I will be picked up by Alexander, DK8FD, who has volunteered to rpovide boarding for the night.  I am armed with 2 laptops, a CW keyer paddle, my favourite headphones and UTP cable. Tonite the bagage will be checked in at Franfurt airport (if we make it in time), and tomorrow morning 9:30 we will be flying to Tropolis. In Janzour, a suburb of Tripolis a quiet beach hotel is waiting for an invasion they won't easilly forget:) There will be spiderbeams all over the hotel, a 4-square for 80m, a Titanex vertical for 160... and over 30 crazy people talking about strange things and sitting behind strange equipment... And oh yes, the lights will flicker in a weird rhitm.

We have ordered an ADSL connection for internet so I hope I can update the blog during my stay. And  of course I have taken the pskmail client with me, just in case.

Wish us luck....

Hoi !

about Lybia : I am an airline pilot ( cargo ) and we fly regularly to Tripoli on the way to S. Africa. Last November I had to position as a pax via Milano to TIP. Everything went wrong at immigration on arrival : "sit down" is the only english they know; our handling agent was refused permission to meet us, no way to use a cellphone, ended up in custody for 1/2 an hour...was able to pay myself + F/O out ( ... ). I filed a report to our company ( because we stayed 6H30 at the airport we could not start our restperiod for our next duty and the flight was delayed for 7 hours...) and initially all flights through TIP were stopped ; then resumed but the flight originates now in Europe, stops in TIP for 1 hour ( crew stays on board ) and then departs...too dangerous, too unsecure, too unsure.. even worse than in 1981/2 when I flew for Lybian Arab Airlins for 18 months, based in TIP. Nice people overall but my message is : stay out of there ! One never knows... and I travel worldwide on a regular basis for the last 32 years.

Hello 5A guys,

Well, interesting reading your experience in Lybia, hehe, well not funny at all in some momemts.

I was frequently flying to and from Tripoli from 2002/2005, twice a month, just with my hand lugage, back pack.

When reading this, I can see myself in same situations you all mentioned, but during 3 years I was not scarried at all, because always something goes wrong. All this passport checking, custom controls etc.

And yes, what can replace the feeling when the plane takoe off from Lybia.

It is not pleasent country at all, even for us who work for their companies in oil busines, it will pass lot of time until they improve something.

Just a feeling in the check in that you are in not same position as the local people, because they are always going first is very bad. If you complain on anything, then you are in trouble.

So the best way is just to sit and wait, sadly but true.

I quit the job there just because of this problems, because is not nice to work and live in the big country when you are just a number in the computer.
